Skateboarding is a sport and means of transportation that originated in California, United States, in the 1950s, as an adaptation of surfing to the streets. Initially, wooden boards with small wheels were used by surfers when there were no waves, allowing them to practice maneuvers on paved surfaces. Over the years, skateboarding evolved to become an activity with its own identity, attracting millions of practitioners worldwide.

The sport involves the use of a "deck" (wooden board), with two axles (trucks) and four wheels, which allow skaters to perform various maneuvers, from jumps (ollies) to flips, grinds, and slides. There are different skateboarding disciplines, such as street, which explores urban obstacles like handrails and stairs; vertical, which is practiced on ramps; and downhill, which involves descending steep slopes at high speed.

Skateboarding is not only a sport but also a subculture associated with music, fashion, and lifestyle. Skate culture became popular with the emergence of competitions, such as the X Games, and iconic figures like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen, who helped shape the sport and bring it into the mainstream.

In 2021, skateboarding made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, an important milestone that solidified its global status. Despite this, the spirit of skateboarding remains rooted in freedom of expression and creativity of its practitioners, who value the exploration of urban spaces and innovation in maneuvers.

In addition to being a physical activity, skateboarding promotes socialization, balance, and coordination, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. It remains an expression of independence and resilience, constantly being reinvented by new generations of skaters around the world.
